Program

At MEFCON, we will discuss how film and TV production companies are expanding made-for-mobile content and interaction via mobile devices; how creators are using mobile technology to find new ways to connect to audiences; explore new frontiers for games, music and mobile video; and delve into the legal, regulatory and market implications of the developing paradigm.

We’ll just be having the conversation a little differently, with enlightening demonstrations and highly interactive, frank exchanges between the most influential people in the space.

What’s more, MEFCON participants will exchange insights during a sunset cruise, dish the day’s events at a cocktail party and use their phones to interact with the panel and vote for Debate Club and Mobile at the Apollo winners. Rather than merely sitting around in conference rooms talking about “user experience,” this must-attend gathering invites you to actually have one.

Fake Steve Jobs
Daniel Lyons, creator of the scathingly hilarious, deceptively insightful and wildly popular blog “The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs," takes on the mobile entertainment industry in his own inimitable style. Will Google rule the world? Is Microsoft doomed? What’s Apple up to? Lyons expands upon the world of his satirical Apple-centric blog to answer these questions, and to examine the way that profound changes in technology continue to shape our lives. Lyons is a senior editor at Forbes Magazine and has written two novels, The Last Good Man and Dog Days.

New digital and mobile channels are playing an increasingly important role in every studio's distribution strategy -- and they've only begun to scratch the surface of interactivity and personalization that the mobile platform can deliver.  Thomas Gewecke will address the digital distribution landscape from a studio perspective, how Warner Bros is working with mobile partners to reach new audiences, and where some of the most exciting future opportunities lie.

Building a Better Mousetrap: User Experience

4:30pm – 5:30pm

MEF’s Quality of Experience study shows that while mobile entertainment applications have a relatively low penetration rate with consumers, certain offerings, such as mobile video, are fast on the rise. Full-size, touch screen phones have increased the usability of some applications, but do they make simple functions, like purchasing a ringtone or syncing content with a laptop, any easier? What are handset manufacturers developing to make phones easier to use and how are the software and content industries taking advantage of the innovations?

Mobile Music: Is Anybody Listening?

10:00am – 11:00am

Few industries outside of music are more aptly described by the adage, “Change is the only constant.” While the music industry runs through a flurry of business models trying to see which one sticks, the only real truth is that people want large collections of music at their disposal and will pay a few hundred dollars for the ability to take it with them wherever they go. Mobile is certainly primed to accommodate both requirements and our panelists will share what they see on the horizon for mobile music.

Mobile games are increasingly becoming an integral part of launching an entertainment property or a consumer brand, but how developed is this sector of mobile entertainment really and where is it headed? With only an 8% rate of penetration, are mobile games overrated or underexploited? Do you have to license console games and major motion picture and television show titles to get any traction with a game? Where is game development trending and are they the next big social networking tool?
